WAAM-HW In-Situ Alloying Enables Novel Bimetallic Steel Structures

A new publication in Scientific Reports investigates the fabrication of bimetallic walls through in-situ alloying of ER70S-6 carbon steel and 316L stainless steel using a WAAM-HW (Hot Wire) process. The study evaluates the influence of wire configuration on microstructure, hardness and corrosion resistance, demonstrating the potential of WAAM-based alloying to create materials with tailored properties.  

The research shows that the hybrid walls achieved corrosion resistance close to that of stainless steel while maintaining the economic advantages associated with carbon steel. The results highlight the opportunities offered by multimaterial additive manufacturing for the development of functionally graded components and advanced engineering applications.
